Maintaining your existing A/C Unit at peak performance has never been more important

Get ready for new SEER regulations for Florida AC units. As of January 1, 2015 manufacturers can no longer produce 13 SEER rated equipment. Units produced before January 1, 2015 can be installed through mid 2016.

It is important to understand that 14 SEER will be the new standard efficiency rating for Florida. This means achieving peak performance from your existing A/C unit.

SEER 14 is different from past mandates because it will mean this is virtually impossible to do without replacing both systems (indoor and outdoor).

Condos will small indoor air handler spaces or with more than 1 unit installed near each other outside can expect issues, due to increased size of units.

As a homeowner or property manager, what action should I take?

Upgrading to a higher efficiency air conditioner or heat pump will not make sense for everyone.

If you are a seasonal resident, residing in South Florida only during the cooler winter months, then a 13 SEER system might adequately serve your needs. Be aware that waiting until next year to replace your unit will force you to purchase at least a 14 SEER system, with a higher efficiency rating than would actually benefit you, at a higher cost.

For many this means that maintaining your existing unit at peak performance so you don’t lose a vital component and have to replace your system. If you are not already on a maintenance program – you should be.
